Stigmata Bookmobile

The Dark Reign of Gothic Rock by Dave Thompson. There's no knitting in it but it's one of the best early UK punk histories I've ever read. Nearly as good as England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond by Jon Savage.

The first half of Dark Reign from Iggy Pop's The Idiot to the early 90's is great, but I get bored by the last half, mostly because the music starts to suck. So far I haven't found a US 70's punk history as entertaining as these two books but I haven't gotten around to buying Richard Hell's Please Kill Me.

Music trivia: The Idiot was the album still going around the turntable when Ian Curtis (Joy Division) hanged himself. So go & buy a copy, not because you'll hang yourself from a clothes drying rack, but because it's a great album and influenced pretty much every UK punk/goth band in the early days. It's the only album I've owned in vinyl, CD, cassette AND 8-track. I bought the 8-track at a flea market and couldn't play it because roaches lived in it and got rolled up in the tape. (Remember kids, that's why you always put your videos and cassettes back in the boxes!)

OK, that was a strange, rambling post and I've had much too much coffee today.

Back to my rocking chair. I'm old.

I usually eat the loose coffee beans hanging around the grinders at the supermarket. Waste not, want not.
